What is IRC and #Sanctuary
?
A wee while ago I sent an
email to HeatherBelle about Channel Sanctuary. We thought that some of
it might be helpful to you too.
IRC
You know how you
can 'chat' on ICQ, sometimes with several people at once.? IRC is set up
just exactly like that, but permanently.
Mellorien is a particular network
set up to provide 'rooms' where people can meet. So the Sitting Room has
a Java chat application which will take people directly onto Mellorien
and into the room or - as it is known in Internet Relay Chat parlance
the Channel. So # means channel, and #sanctuary is a particular channel
set aside for people who need someone to talk to. People with Mirc or pirch
or one of those programmes can go onto the network and enter #sanctuary
from there, or people browsing the angelfire site can wander in from the
page. Vickie stays in there, keeping it open nearly all day and half the
night too.
Personally, because I am networked, I
can't use the Java Chat option. Instead I use a programme called mIRC,
which is really easy to set up.
vickie uses a programme called pIRC,
which she really prefers.
Clicking on either of these .gifs will
take you to a page from which you can download one of these programmes.
It seems that both programmes are now
pretty streamlined, and have the Server options in their 'setup' menu.
Take care to choose the option StarChat, which is found on the 'Server
List' (#sanctuary appears on more than one network, and not all of them
are 'us' as I found out the other evening) Then visit us in #sanctuary.
We'll try to answer any questions you may have, and will take it from there.
